A general overview of English As An Additional Language (EAL) at Academia

Academia’s English as an Additional Language (EAL) courses prepare learners for active participation in the Australian community as well as increasing English skills for vocational courses and work.

There are two levels offered at Academia, EAL II (Access) and EAL III (Access), delivered from Monday to Thursday, totalling 20 hours per week. More information about these levels is given below.

What skills are acquired in EAL?

The EAL courses will focus on developing speaking skills for casual conversations and transactions. You will also develop reading and writing skills for everyday communication and academic needs.

EAL Levels

EAL II (Access)

EAL II (Access) is for lower intermediate level learners.

What you will learn in this course

  1. You will practise simple social conversations, giving instructions and directions.
  2. You will read and write a variety of personal and formal texts.
  3. You will also develop computer skills including online literacy.

EAL III (Access)

EAL III (Access) is for intermediate level learners.

What you will learn in this course

  1. You will practise simple social conversations and spoken transactions including giving instructions and oral presentations.
  2. You will complete forms, read and write formal texts such as summaries, essays and reports.
  3. You will further develop your English skills while learning about the Australian environment, art and culture.
  4. You will also practise technology skills and using social media for work.

You are eligible for a free English Language course if you meet the eligibility requirements for Skills First funding:

  1. You are a Victorian Resident AND
  2. You are either
    1. An Australian Citizen OR
    2. An Australian Permanent Resident OR
    3. A NZ Citizen OR
    4. An Asylum Seeker

AND

  1. You do not hold a qualification issued by an Australian VET or higher education provider that is at AQF level 5 (Diploma) or higher; AND
  2. Are not enrolled in the Commonwealth Government’s "Skills for Education and Employment" program
