Starting an online course? 4 things you need to succeed!

There are a lot of new government funded courses online, with the list of available courses growing considerably over the last couple of years (and not a minute too soon!)

With so many courses now qualifying for government funding and online learning making leaps and bounds (and thereby making retraining more flexible than ever before), it’s little wonder that there are so many people considering changing their career or upskilling.

The question is… should you?

At Academia we adamantly believe you can do anything you put your mind to. It is our goal to make sure you have the tools you need to succeed.

And a part of that is ensuring you know what you’re getting into.

About to start an online course? If so, you’re going to need 4 important things if you’re to succeed, no matter what subject you’re about to commence…

Studying online? You’re going to need…

1) Passion

Regardless of whether you’re training online or off, the main thing you need to succeed is a passion for the course you plan on enrolling in.

While it would be a little cliche to say that any challenges you face while undertaking your course can be overcome through passion alone, we strongly believe a passion for your studies can go a long way towards successfully completing your studies.

Not only that, but if you’re excited about your future career and the prospects it will bring, then you might also find your course a joy to complete!

Passion plays a big role in your motivation to study – this is especially important when studying online.

This type of remote learning requires focus, organisation and for you to be a self-starter. A strong passion for what you’re doing can go a long way towards keeping you focused and on-task.

2) Focus

Obviously, focus is important no matter what you’re studying or how.

However, it’s especially important when all of your learning is occurring online!

Just look around your home – how many potential distractions are within sight or easy reach?

Your phone, your pet, your family in the next room (and even the fridge in the kitchen!) And of course, there’s always the distractions on your computer itself.

If possible, find a quiet part of the home to set up your desk, and ensure distractions are minimised when you’re in class.

The ability to focus and stay on-task is extra-important when learning online, and one that you’re going to need if you decide to make online learning a part of your plans.

3) Organisation

Organisation is the best friend of every student.

Just like focus however, it’s especially important when studying online!

The first thing you want to do is make a record of when every assignment is due – keep that information stored somewhere you can access it easily, and set strict timetables and deadlines to ensure you don’t fall behind.

A good idea is to set reminders on your phone for assessments, with alerts in your calendar will ensure you’re always on time for lessons.

After all, when you study online, nobody else is going to do this for you!

4) The right equipment

This one goes without saying!

If you’re going to study online, you’re going to need the right tools to attend online classes, complete the tasks required of you in your course and submit assignments.

This means you’ll need access to:

  • A computer or laptop
  • A reliable internet connection
  • A webcam and microphone

And that’s on top of any other materials and workbooks prescribed by your training institute.

Not only is it the most versatile option, but you’ll also be able to enjoy a free subscription to Microsoft Office Online, a web-based version of Office all of our students get to use.
