Higher demand for qualified childcare services
In recent years, the demand for childcare workers has risen dramatically.
The boom was so sudden, the childcare market was actually left with an oversupply of childcare services, which only recently corrected itself!
The significant rise in the number of households with two employed parents has created a higher demand for childcare.
With both parents at work to support the family, mothers and fathers need quality, reliable childcare services now more than ever.
Not to mention, recent changes to the child to carer ratio put in place by the National Quality Framework (NQF) has driven a spike in job openings for new childcare workers and carers (more on that below).
The number of subsidised childcare spots is increasing
According to figures released by the Federal Government, the number of children accessing subsidised childcare is expected to hit 2 million by next year – a 300,000 increase from the 2016-2017 fiscal year.
That’s a lot of children entering child care for the first time.
And with existing centres being required to meet new carer to child ratios (don’t worry, we’ll get to that), that means many centres are hiring new carers.
How the National Quality Framework (NQF) has created new job opportunities
The change to educator to child ratios were introduced in January 2016.
Before the NQF implemented changes to the ratio requirement, the ratio differed between states across Australia.
Unfortunately, the previous ratios often led to childcare workers stretching themselves thin, which then impacted the quality of care provided.
In response, the NQF revised its mandatory carer-to-child ratios.
Thanks to this change however, many childcare and daycare centres have had to go on hiring sprees to ensure they’re providing enough coverage for the children in their care.
In Queensland for example, the current ratio are as follows:
Age Group | Carer-to-child Ratio |
Birth – 24 months | 1:4 |
24 months – 36 months | 1:5 |
36 months+ | 1:11 |
Over preschool age | 1:15 |
Long story short: if the goal is to find work in a career that’s positively overflowing with job opportunities, childcare is the place to be!
