Things to know before you apply (International Students)

This page contains the information to assist you in making an informed decision to enrol with Academia International.  This is a summary of information relating to; training, assessment and support services and your rights and obligations as a student of Academia International.

 

The information contained on this page is particular to International Students whom enter Australia to study on a student visa.

Entry requirements for Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses

Academia International has processes to assess whether a prospective student’s qualifications, experience and English Language proficiency are appropriate for the course in which enrolment is sought.

 

General requirements:

Must be at least 18 years of age

 

English Language proficiency* (one of the following criteria only):

 

1.   IELTS 5.5 (no individual band below 4.5), or an equivalent English score result as recognised by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) regulations; or
 

2.   An English proficiency of Upper Intermediate level from Academia International or any other NEAS accredited ELICOS course; or
 

3.   An English medium High School qualification equivalent to Year 10 (Victoria, Australia) and recognised by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC); or
 

4.   A qualification equivalent to Certificate IV (AQF, Australia) or higher majoring in English or conducted in the English Language; or
 

5.   A score of 80% or higher on the Academia International Placement test.
 

*If the English Language requirements cannot be satisfied, a student can still enrol into our Vocational programs after successfully completing one or more of the English Language courses offered by Academia International (read more). 

 

Educational background/prior work experience (One of the following criteria only):

  1. Year 11 (Victoria, Australia) or equivalent International qualification as recognised by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) [assessment level 1 and 2 countries only]; or
     

  2. Year 12 (Victoria, Australia) or equivalent International qualification as recognised by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) [assessment level 3 and 4 countries only]; or
     

  3. Mature aged entry, if not meeting either 1 or 2 the following applies:

a. Demonstrating relevant work experience in the vocation chosen to study; or

b. Application into a package of courses which cover the pre-requisite knowledge and skills (e.g Certificate III, Certificate IV and Diploma)

Study modes and assessment methods

This section provides a description of the study modes and assessment methods used by each of the Schools within Academia International.

Business, Commerce and Information Technology Schools

 

The courses offered in the School of Business, Commerce and Information Technology are delivered face-to-face, through a combination of tutorials and computer lab workshops.

 

Assessment methods include written tests, computer-based tasks, and assignments.  Resources include textbooks, hand-outs, and presentations.

 

Equipment includes: Fully Equipped Computer Labs, Accounting/Business Software, Client Server and student PCs, Printed and on line Resources. Spacious classrooms, free internet access.

Hairdressing and Beauty Schools

 

The Hairdressing and Beauty Schools use face-to-face instructor-led training for practical and theoretical units of competency. Skills are demonstrated to students in a functional and operational Hairdressing/Beauty Salon or in a classroom setup with work stations. Students will practise the skills demonstrated until assessed as being competent.

The assessment methods that are typically involved: practical demonstrations/test, written assignments, written exams, role plays or group work.

Resources include textbooks, hand-outs, presentations, hairdressing and beauty therapy facilities, computer lab (with high-speed internet)

 

Hospitality Schools (Bakery, Cookery, Food Processing, Patisserie, Management)

 

The Hospitality Schools use face-to-face instructor-led training for practical and theoretical units of competency. Skills are demonstrated to students in a functional and operational demonstration kitchen or in the commercial kitchens of Academia International and

The assessment methods that are typically involved: practical demonstrations/test, written assignments, written exams, role plays, excursions or group work..

Resources include textbooks, hand-outs, presentations, kitchen facilities, computer lab (with high-speed internet)

English Language School

 

The English School uses face-to-face lectures for all modules. The assessment methods that are typically involved: written assignments, written exams, role plays, excursions or group work.

Pathway arrangements

Academia International is recognised as a College delivering quality tuition in Vocational Education and Training. This recognition is demonstrated in the pathways we have achieved to date with quality Institutions in the University and Higher Education sectors.  After you complete the Diploma of Hospitality or the Diploma of Hairdressing Salon Management there is an articulation path way into Victoria University's Bachelors of Business (Majoring in Hospitality or Small Business and Entrepreneurship).

Course Fees and Refunds

 

Fees for International Students can be viewed here.  Fees changes: Academia International will honour the tuition fees quoted in accordance with clause 16 of the Terms and Conditions of enrolment.

Deferment, Suspension and Cancellation of Enrolment

The commencement date of your course (deferment) or the an unscheduled break (suspension also known as a deferment) will only be approved in limited circumstances as per the Deferment, Suspension and Cancellation policy listed in the Student Handbook.

 

It is important you understand that inappropriate behaviour as per the discipline policy listed in the Student Handbook, non-payment of fees or where Visa regulations have not been adhered to can all lead to your enrolment being cancelled by Academia International.

ESOS Framework.

 

Academia International is bound by the Education Services for Overseas Students
(ESOS) Act and related regulations, referred to as the ESOS Framework. 

 

The ESOS framework sets out the obligations of education providers delivering courses to International Students and the consumer rights of those students.

School-aged Dependants

If you are a current overseas student, or intending overseas student please be advised that Australian law mandates your obligations to ensure that any *school-aged dependants accompanying you to be enrolled into a school.

 

*In the state of Victoria, the Education Reform Act 2006 defines school-age as not les than six (6) nor more than sixteen (16) years of age.

 

Your options for the schooling of your school-aged dependants are:

 

·         Government Schools - search for a government school in the state of Victoria 

·         Non-Government Schools (including schools of different religions )
- search for a non-government school in the state of Victoria

Support Services

Academia International provides a number of Support Services to students.  There are Student Welfare Officers within the college to consult on these and other services.  The Student Welfare Officers will counsel students and may provide free referrals to external parties as necessary where the service is not provided within the college or the student has a support need not offered by the college.
